About This Quote

Fire. God of Abraham, God of Isaac, God of Jacob, not of the philosophers and the scholars. I will not forget thy word. Amen.

It is said that in ancient times, fire was regarded as a god in many parts of the world. The words, “Fire. God of Abraham, God of Isaac, God of Jacob, not of the philosophers and the scholars” are part of a prayer that was discovered among the Dead Sea Scrolls.

This prayer is thought to have been uttered by a man named David ben Hemda when he was in prison after being captured during a battle in Jerusalem in the year 116 C.E. Hemda was apparently praying to fire when he wrote this prayer on parchment that had been smuggled out of Jerusalem by one of his fellow prisoners who had hid it within his clothing. The words were found by scholar Yigael Yadin in a cave near Qumran on the shore of the Dead Sea in Israel in 1956.

The prayer is written in Hebrew with Aramaic words at the end translated into English.
